Sean Cavanagh has been on a great run since his retirement from the Tyrone team ended in a bitterly disappointing All-Ireland SFC semi-final defeat to Dublin.

In the last couple of months, he's won Tyrone and Ulster club IFC medals with his beloved Moy, celebrated the birth of his son Sean Jnr and was honoured by the Tyrone Association in Dublin. And last Friday night, the three-time All-Ireland winner was presented with the Mick Doyle Golden Memory Award at the 2017 Canon Hayes National Sports Awards ceremory in the Great National Ballykisteen Hotel in Tipperary.

The awards, which are recognised as being one of the most prestigious in the country, celebrate sport on a local and national basis.

"The awards were inaugurated in 1996 and over the years have grown in importance and significance. This is attributable to the fact that they encompass all sporting disciplines and that they adequately reflect the top sporting achievements in any given year. In effect, they are a true barometer of the sporting year," says Canon Hayes chairman Martin Quinn.
