Noel McGrath has been chosen as the Tipperary Person of the Year by the Tipperary Association Dublin.

The star hurler has been honoured for his efforts in raising cancer awareness, particiularly among young men. McGrath was diagnosed with testicular cancer last spring, but following surgery, defied the odds to play in Tipperary's All-Ireland SHC semi-final defeat to Galway in August.

Speaking at the announcement of the award, the president of the Tipperary Association Dublin, Liam Myles, said the dignified way the 25-year-old had handled his adversity - as well as the "courageous way he publicly acknowledged his illness" - had played a role in their decision to hand him the award.

However, it was the fact "he highlighted testicular cancer and the need for males - young and old - to be monitored and checked" that set him apart from the other nominees.

The recipient of the Tipperary Association's Hall of Fame Award is Dr John Ryan, a native of Ardfinnan, in recognition of his lifetime contribution and achievements in the field of soil science, education and humanity throughout the world.

Both awards will be presented at the annual awards ceremony on Saturday, March 5 in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin
