The late Brian Gubbins

The GAA and wider community in Nenagh is mourning the tragic death of Brian Gubbins.

The 19-year-old's body was recovered from a river in Galway yesterday morning after he disappeared while on a night out in the city on Thursday. A massive search had been carried out by family and friends for the first year journalism and new media student at the University of Limerick before his remains were discovered in the water in the Bridge Street area of Galway at around 10am.

Nenagh-based Sinn Fein councillor Seamie Morris described Brian as one of one of the local GAA club's brightest prospects.

"The whole town is unified in grief," he told the Irish Daily Star.

"He was a lovely lad from a well-respected family and he had a big smile for everybody he met. I knew Brian through the GAA as he was a goalkeeper on the Nenagh Eire Og minor hurling team that won the county final last year."
