Munster MFC: Quirke the difference for champions
May 17, 2012

Tipperary's Ian Fahey gets away from Cork's Alan O'Donovan during the Munster MFC semi final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh
Tipperary 1-10
Cork 0-9
Philip Quirke helped himself to 1-2 as All-Ireland champions Tipperary maintained their recent dominance over Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh last night to qualify for the Munster MFC final.
The Premier County will now renew their rivalry after the Leaving Cert exams with Kerry, who they beat convincingly in the first round. Quirke, who started at midfield, was especially effective following his move to full forward, while John McGrath and Dylan Fitzell were also impressive for the visitors, who repeated last year's Munster final victory over the Rebels.
In a scrappy first half, Tipperary twice held two-point leads, but the hosts went into the break level (0-5 each) thanks to late points from Killian O'Connor and Cathal Vaughan.
Tipp made a great start to the second half when Quirke scored the only goal, but Cork replied with scores from Killian McIntyre and Ian Maguire to leave the minimum in it.
Quirke and substitute Ian Fahey restored Tipp's three-point lead, only for Cork substitute Aidan Moynihan to respond at the other end. But Tipp tightened their grip on proceedings thereafter, with Quirke's second point in the 58th minute putting four between the sides for the first time.
The Rebels' hopes were finally ended when Brian O'Driscoll had a penalty saved by Evan Comerford in injury-time.
