McGrath Cup: Tipp into decider

January 22, 2012
Tipperary stepped it up after the restart to beat UCC by 1-15 to 0-10 at Clonmel.

This is the third successive weekend that John Evans' charges got the better of third-level opposition but there was no doubting the quality of the opposition in this semi-final as UCC are a proven outfit.

After a late start, the sides finished level at half time, 0-7 apiece, and the winners led for the first time when ace marksman Barry Grogan hit his sixth score eight minutes into the second half.

The wind-assisted students - current Cork county champions and Sigerson Cup holders - opened up an early lead with two frees from Gavin O'Grady inside the opening five minutes.

O'Grady got four scores in the first half and midfielder Jamie O'Sullivan hit the students' other three before the short whistle.

Tipp took a while to get going...

Grogan struck five for the Premier County before the break and wing back Brian Fox also fisted an impressive score.

After UCC made a bright start to the second period, Hugh Coughlan tied it up and a Grogan 45 had Tipp in front.

Grogan nailed the decisive goal and subs Brian Mulviill and Shane Ryan were amongst a host of second-half Premier County scorers.
