Munster MHC: Lethal Hartnett sinks Tipp
April 29, 2010
Cork 2-31
Tipperary 4-22
An awesome tally of 1-14 from Brian Hartnett helped Cork to see off Tipperary after extra-time last night at Pairc Ui Chaoimh and book their place in the semi-finals of the ESB Munster Hurling Championship.
In an epic game, the teams were even after 60 minutes at 2-21 to 3-18, but it was six points from the superb Hartnett in the second-half of extra-time which proved the difference for the Rebels here at the expense of a brave Tipp outfit.
The hosts had made the better start to the game by going 0-5 to 0-2 up after 11 minutes, but a goal from Aidan McCormack brought Tipp right back into the game and at half-time they only trailed by 0-11 to 1-6.
Both teams lifted their performance after the interval, with Jamie Coughlan smashing in a penalty two minutes in, but two points from Liam McGrath and McCormack's second major saw the teams drawn level soon after.
Cork came back at their opponents and pulled off a sweet move which saw Shane O'Keefe offloading to Coughlan, who crossed to Hartnett and lethal corner-forward dived to flick the ball into the net. That helped the Leesiders surge four in front approaching the closing stages, but a resilient Tipp side wouldn't give in and a third goal from McCormack along with a pointed free from McGrath looked to have them on their way.
However, a brilliant last-gasp point from Cork substitute Jamie Wall forced extra-time, where a fourth goal couldn't even win it for Tipp, as Hartnett's spree proved the difference in the end.
