NHL 1: Dubs stun Tipp

Tipperary's Eoin Kelly tackles Maurice O'Brien of Dublin as Niall Corcoran offers support during the NHL Division 1 game at Parnell Park
Dublin produced a stunning display to beat Tipperary by 1-21 to 1-12 at Parnell Park.

Anthony Daly had requested a reaction from his players following last weekend's loss in Waterford and he certainly got it as the Metropolitans inflicted a comprehensive defeat on last year's finalists.

The Premier County can perhaps cite their relative rustiness as a mitigating factor (as this is their first outing in the league following the double postponement of their clash with Kilkenny), but Liam Sheedy can't have been overly-impressed by this below-par display.

In contrast, the winners delivered a spirited first-half display to lead by 1-12 to 1-7 at the break. It was a great effort from the hosts, who were rocked by the early concession of a goal but recovered superbly to dominate much of the first half.

Shane Durcan clipped over two late points to ensure them of a deserved five-point cushion going in at the interval.

In contrast to Dublin's workrate, Tipp were looking every bit like a team making their first appearance of the year.

Tipperary were awarded a penalty after just ten seconds and captain Eoin Kelly blasted his shot past Gary Maguire to the net to get the Premier County off to a real flier.

But determined Dublin replied with six successive points - including fine strikes from Dotsy O'Callaghan, Alan McCrabbe, Liam Rushe and Maurice O'Brien - to roar into a 0-6 to 1-0 lead.

Kelly and Noel McGrath were amongst the Tipp scorers before John McCaffrey grabbed the Dublin goal to make it 1-8 to 1-6 coming up to the half-hour mark.

The sides traded the first six points of the second half. David Treacy, Kelly (2) and McCrabbe all raised flags as the gap stayed at five, 1-15 to 1-10.

McCaffrey and the industrious Peter Kelly extended the Sky Blues' lead to seven points with 15 minutes played in the second half.

With wing forward Kelly, Treacy, Durcan, McCrabbe (0-9, including a sumptuous sideline cut) and Caffrey leading the way, the motivated Dubs led by 1-20 to 1-11 twenty minutes into the second half.

Two points were traded before Tipp were awarded their second penalty right at the death - again for a foul on Lar Corbett - but this time Kelly's effort in the second minute of added time rebounded back off the crossbar.

The outstanding Kelly spirited the ball to safety and the brilliant Dubs got a 45-metre free, which All Star McCrabbe sent wide but the final whistle sounded with nine points between the teams, 1-21 to 1-12 - a famous win for Dublin.
