TIPPERARY AND KILKENNY IN TUESDAY NIGHT SPECTACULAR
Hurling under lights is a fairly new phenomenon in hurling and tonight in Semple Stadium, Thurles it moves into a new phase with a first major mid-week game under lights when Tipperary host Kilkenny in an Allianz GAA Division 1 game that was postponed last Saturday night due to snow. The counties face a busy schedule as they will be in action against next Sunday when Kilkenny host Offaly and Tipperary visit Dublin.
Offaly and Dublin both lost their opening round games last Sunday so a quick return to winning ways is vital if they are not to get dragged into the relegation zone at a very stage. Dublin were hit for four goals as rampant Waterford won by 13 points in Walsh Park while Cork beat Offaly by eleven points, thanks an impressive late burst. Galway also improved in the second half to beat Limerick by seven points and are now looking forward to hosting Waterford in Pearse Stadium on Sunday in a game that will be screened live by TG4.
It will be the first clash between the counties since Waterford staged a great recovery to beat Galway in the All-Ireland quarter-final last July. Limerick host Cork in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday night in a game which will be shown 'live' by Setanta Ireland.
Tonight: Tipperary v Kilkenny, Thurles, 8.0.
Saturday: Limerick v Cork, Gaelic Grounds, 7.30 (Live on Setanta Ireland)
Sunday (2.30): Galway v Waterford, Pearse Stadium (Live on TG4); Kilkenny v Offaly, Nowlan Park; Dublin v Tipperary, Parnell Park.
DIVISION 2: WEXFORD, CLARE MAKE EARLY PROGRESS
Next Sunday (2.30 unless stated): (Round 2): Wexford v Down, Wexford Park, 1.30; Kildare v Antrim, Newbridge; Laois v Clare, Portlaoise; Carlow v Westmeath, Dr.Cullen Park.
The scramble for promotion will be intense in this group which means that any team which loses its first two games will be facing a very tough struggle to remain in contention for a place in the final, the winners of which will head for Division 1. Carlow, Down and Westmeath lost last weekend, putting all three under pressure to pick up points next weekend.
Carlow will be at home to Westmeath in what promises to be a very exciting game while Down, who lost to Clare by 20 points last Sunday, face another tough task when they travel to Wexford who had nine points to spare over Westmeath last Sunday.
DIVISION 3A: GOOD START BY KERRY AND MEATH
Sunday (2.30): Meath v Armagh, Pairc Tailteann; London v Derry, Ruislip; Mayo v Kerry, Castlebar.
Kerry and Meath made impressive starts to the campaign (Armagh v Mayo was postponed due to snow), beating Derry and London by ten and five points respectively last Sunday. Meath have home advantage against Armagh while Kerry will be away to Mayo. London have a second successive home tie when they entertain Derry.
DIVISION 3B: DONEGAL v LOUTH WINNERS TO GO TOP
Sunday (2.30): Roscommon v Down, Athleague; Donegal v Louth, Letterkenny; Sligo v Fingal, Markievicz Park.
Donegal and Louth, both of won their opening games against Sligo and Tyrone respectively, clash in a game where the winners will move to the top of the table.
Fingal, whose game against Wicklow was postponed due to snow last Sunday, head for Sligo who lost to Louth by six points last Sunday.
DIVISION 4: CAVAN BID TO HEAD TABLE
Sunday (2.30): Fermanagh v Leitrim, Enniskillen; Longford v Cavan, Pearse Park; South Down v Monaghan, Ballela.
Cavan v Leitrim was the only game to go ahead last Sunday with Cavan winning by 1-17 to 3-4. Cavan will head for Longford next Sunday where a win would guarantee that they top the table, thus setting in the early pace in the race for promotion.
