Ryan Cup final: Historic first for Garda
December 03, 2008
Garda College were crowned Ryan Cup champions for the first time following their victory over Cork IT in Tuesday's Higher Education Division 1 league football final at Kildorrery, Co. Cork.
Garda College..0-12
Cork IT.....1-6
This year's beaten Sigerson Cup finalists laid down a marker for next season's competition with an impressive display. The sides were level on 0-3 each after 10 minutes, but with Cork star Michael Cussen dominant at midfield, they took control in the second quarter to lead by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time.
With Cork's Michael Harrington and Kildare's Eamonn O'Callaghan in fine scoring form, they had opened up a 0-10 to 0-3 lead by the 40th minute, but when Cork star Daniel Goulding scored the only goal in the 48th minute, the margin was down to one point, 0-10 to 1-6.
However, Garda scored the last two points to seal an historic win.
