Munster club JFC: Cappawhite and Ballyduff advance

November 24, 2008
Tipperary's Cappawhite and Ballyduff Upper of Waterford progressed in the Munster junior football championship following the respective victories over Eire Og (Cork) and Kildysart (Clare). Cappawhite pulled off a major shock when they getting the better of Eire Og by 2-11 to 0-15 in Cashel. With his very first touch, substitute Sean Ryan scored what proved to be the match-winning goal 11 minutes from the end before the home side survived a major scare in the final minute when Eire Og midfielder Alan O'Mahony's shot hit the upright. Cappa led by 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time thanks to Ciaran Ryan's 16th minute goal, but the Ovens men resumed with six unanswered points to take a 0-10 to 1-4 lead, with Daniel Goulding to the fore. The visitors were leading 0-13 to 1-9 when Ryan's goal turned the game on its head. Waterford junior champions Ballyduff Upper created history when they won their first ever Munster club football match to qualify for the semi-final, where they'll face Kerry's Skellig Rangers, at Kildysart's expense. An injury-time goal from midfielder Seamus Hannon sealed a deserved 1-8 to 0-5 victory for the home side. The signs looked ominous for Kildysart when they only led 0-3 to 0-2 at half-time after playing with a strong wind. Two points from John Twomey and another by Patrick Kearney put Ballduff in front early in the second half, but the outcome remained in doubt until Hannon's late major sealed the deal.
