Munster club SHC: Foley inspires shock Adare win
November 17, 2008
Limerick captain Mark Foley was at his brilliant best as Adare upset the odds to reach the Munster club hurling final at Toomevara's expense at the Gaelic Grounds.
Adare...1-11
Toomevara.0-10
The Limerick champions laid the foundations for their victory in the opening half when they built up a 1-8 to 0-3 half-time lead. Veteran half back Foley was immense throughout, while midfielder Wayne McNamara was also to the fore as Adare progressed to a novel provincial final showdown against Waterford's De La Salle on Sunday week.
Adare, who will become the first Limerick side to contest a Munster club final since Kilmallock in 1994, had established a 1-4 to 0-1 lead after just 13 minutes with Liam Costello accounting for the only goal in the 11th minute.
Ken Dunne's 17th minute point was Toomevara's first score in 10 minutes and Francid Devanney followed up with an excellent score shortly afterwards. It could have been closer at half-time had Dunne's dipping free in the 27th minute not bounced off the crossbar and away to safety.
The Greyhounds were much improved after the restart and a run of six unanswered points brought them to within two of their opponents, 1-8 to 0-9, with nine minutes remaining. But late points from Donnacha Sheehan, Diarmuid Sexton and Conor Fitzgerald ended the Toomevara comeback, and their misery was compounded by the dismissal of Eoin Brislane on a straight red card three minutes from the end.
