COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Thurles Sarsfields will play Toomevara on Sunday next at 3:30pm in the County Senior Hurling Championship Final in Semple Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Tipp FM (www.tippfm.com) while TG4 will show deferred coverage of the Sunday's Final from around 5:00pm onwards. The Tipperary Senior Hurling champions will play the Limerick Senior Hurling champions (Ahane or Adare) in the semi-final of the Munster Club Championship at a Limerick venue on November 16th. The Munster Club Final is scheduled for November 30th.
SEAMUS O RIAIN CUP FINAL
The curtain raiser on Sunday at Semple Stadium will be the inaugural final of the Seamus O Riain Cup Senior Hurling competition as Carrick Swan take on Kilruane MacDonaghs at 1:30pm. Carrick Swan have earned their place in this final thanks to victories over three teams from the North Division - namely Lorrha-Dorrha, Borris-Ileigh and Moneygall. Kilruane MacDonaghs have taken a slightly different route, accounting for teams from three divisions with Cashel King Cormacs (West), Nenagh Eire Og (North) and Upperchurch-Drombane (Mid) all losing out to Kilruane. Sunday's match could be a battle between the Carrick Swan defence (who have conceded just three goals in their matches to date - including extra time in the semi-final) and the Kilruane MacDonaghs young forward line that have scored 12 goals and 48 points in their three games, an average of 4-16 per match. In all, Sunday's final will be the 12th match in this competition for teams who in previous years would have been fighting against relegation at this time of the year. While a small number of games have been one sided, the majority of the matches played to date have been close affairs with two games going to extra time as most clubs looked to rebound from the disappointment of faring poorly in their Divisional Championship.
The Tipperary County Board are delighted that the name of Seamus O Riain is linked with this new competition. Seamus was for many years one of the leading GAA officials in Ireland with the highlight coming when Seamus served as GAA President from 1967 to 1970. Seamus was President of the Tipperary County Board from 1990 up to his death last year and it is fitting that his memory is honoured in this way.
REFEREES
Noel Cosgrove of Marlfield has been chosen to referee his first County Senior Hurling Championship Final on Sunday next. In the last 12 months, Noel has been very active with the 2008 Christy Ring Cup Final the highlight in addition to taking charge of the 2008 All-Ireland Inter-County Vocational Schools Final. Denis Curtis from Thurles Sarsfields will take charge of Sunday's Seamus O Riain Cup Final while Keith Delahunty of Moyle Rovers will referee Saturday's County Intermediate Hurling Final.
HONOURING TEAMS OF THE PAST
In keeping with the tradition of recent years, the programme for County Senior Hurling Final day will include a tribute to a team of the past. The Moyne-Templetuohy team which won the 1971 County Senior Hurling title will be honoured in between both matches on Sunday next at Semple Stadium. This event is being organised by the Tipperary County Board and is sponsored by the Tipperary Star newspaper and Young's of the Ragg.
