He’s the GAA’s most successful manager but Brian Cody says it’s players who win or lose matches.

On Sunday, the history-making James Stephens clubman will manage his county in an All-Ireland final for the 18th time.

“I always feel helpless. You are there and you can pretend you have this huge influence on things, but it is all about what is happening on the field. You can't go in on the field,” the Kilkenny legend told The Irish Daily Star.

“I would never have any sense of my absolute importance to the players on match day at all. It is the importance of the players and what they bring. You live and die by that.”
