St Patricks Club Notes

Intermediate Team News St. Pats played St. Michaels in a crucial Championship game last Saturday evening, having to win the game by at least 9 points to go through to the next round. Despite such a heavy task on their hands, St. Pats showed admirable mental and physical strength to win the game by a point. The game was a fine display of what St. Pats football is capable of, but hadn't quite showed yet this year. St. Michaels started the scoring with a converted free, but not before Declan Kiely pulled off a fine save to deny Michaels a goal. Padraic Clarke took Pats first score, a well-taken point after good work from Conor Brady and Keith Farry. The two teams exchanged scores each, Pats scores coming from Mark Boland's excellent 45 and a close-range point from Padraic Clarke. However Michaels pulled two points ahead when a high ball punched into the net gave them their first goal. St. Pats responded quickly, with Declan Clarke recovering the ball well at full back, and good passing by Paul Kelly and Padraic Clarke got the back to corner back Patrick Farrell who showed terrific skill to chip the ball into his chest. He simply popped the ball across to Keith Farry, who buried it in the net. This goal left the half-time score in favour of Pats at 1-3 to 1-2. As in the first-half, Michaels started the better and scored a point to equal the scoring. Padraic Clarke brought Pats back in front with a left-footed point from the right wing. St. Michaels scored 1-1 on the trot, before Padraic Clarke levelled the scored once again, with two frees from a tight angle under fierce intimidation from the Michaels supporters, and a point from play after good work from Conor Brady. The ever hard-working Augustine Clarke gave a great ball into the forwards which resulted in a point from Donal Finneran. Once again St. Michaels scored 1-1 without reply, but as happened in the first half Pats came back quickly and despite a very crowded square, sub Barry Clarke managed to strike the ball into the net. Pats followed this up with a point from second substitute Darragh Clarke. Martin Devaney finished the scoring for Pats with a well-taken point, and despite St. Michaels scoring one more point, Pat came away with a winning margin of one point. It was an extremely exciting game with several good performances from the St. Pats team with a good mix of experience and young talent. The win now means St. Pats will have to play a play-off game to ascertain their position in the Intermediate Championship.
