Christy Ring Cup play-off: Rossies retain status

August 10, 2008
Thomas Reddington's second half goal proved decisive as Roscommon preserved their Christy Ring Cup status with a hard-earned victory over Nicky Rackard Cup champions Sligo at Carrick-on-Shannon. Roscommon..1-17 Sligo.....1-13 Despite being forced to line out without their injured talisman Paul Severs, Sligo started strongly and led by 0-7 to 0-3 after 20 minutes. They extended their advantage when Damien Burke found the net in the 26th minute, but Roscommon rallied with points from John Moran and Liam Reidy to trail by 0-8 to 1-9 at half-time. Roscommon continued their improvement after the restart as unanswered points from Shaun Sweeney, Shane Curley and Liam Casey brought them to within a point of the Yeats County. Both teams exchanged a brace of points before Reddington's 48th minute strike gave Roscommon a lead they wouldn't relinquish thereafter, despite the best efforts of Sligo who, as a result of this defeat, stay in the Nicky Rackard Cup for another year.
