O'Hara fixtures issue needs to be addressed

Sligo's Eamonn O'Hara

The lack of games for club players during the summer months is a real cause for concern, according to former Sligo player Eamonn O'Hara.

Writing in his weekly column for the Sligo Champion, O'Hara stressed that the whole situation needed to be addressed sooner rather than later.

There is a nationwide feeling that club players are suffering when the All-Ireland champions are up and running.

A serious lack of club games in most counties has resulted in younger players heading for the likes of the U.S for the summer and indeed missing very few championship games at home.

"I'm well aware that the county team has to be facilitated but Sligo activities continually seem to make a mess of it," wrote O'Hara.

"Can anyone explain why only five competitive games are played over a three month period? Activities are managing to do the lord's miracle of the five loaves and two fishes."

O'Hara went on to write: "For 2016 I would suggest playing the league off before the end of May. Identify six games that county players are available to play."
