David Rooney produced a man of the match performance as Sligo retained the Connacht JFC title at Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.

In a game where several goal chances went abegging, the holders led from the moment Stephen Coen kicked the opening score. James Hynes doubled their advantage before Adrian Croal got Leitrim off the mark.

Hynes and Rooney found the target again before Leitrim narrowed the gap with efforts from Stephen McGurrin and Rooney. But further scores from Rooney and Hynes gave the Yeatsmen a 0-6 to 0-3 lead at the break.

When Croal left the minimum in it in the closing stages, it looked like Leitrim might rescue the game, but late pointed frees from goalkeeper Aidan Devaney and Rooney sealed the deal for the team in black and white.
