'Square ball' rule comes into effect on May 14
May 01, 2012
The recently-amended 'square ball' rule in Gaelic football will come into effect on the 14 May.
The new rule, which was rubberstamped at Congress on 14 April at Congress, allows the attacking player (in open play) to enter the small rectangle before the ball is delivered. From set play - frees, sidelines or '45s - the old square ball rule still applies.
The other rule changes that were approved by Congress, including referees being allowed more widespread consultation with their umpires and linesmen when there is a doubt over decisions, will also take effect on the same date.
Rule changes made at Congress come into effect 30 days later, meaning that the old version of the square ball rule will be in operation when Sligo play New York in the first game of the championship on Sunday night.
O'Neill also confirmed that Hawk-Eye technology will be in use at Croke Park for the start of the championship after it was trialled during the Allianz League.
