Connacht JFC: Galway dethrone holders after extra-time

Galway 1-16
Sligo 0-16 aet

Galway needed extra-time to end Sligo's reign as Connacht junior football champions in last night's first round clash at Tubbercurry.

After Peadar Seoighe forced extra-time with a last-minute point to make it 1-10 to 0-13, the Tribesmen took control in the first period of the additional 20 minutes to lead by 1-15 to 0-13 at the halfway stage. And there was no way back for Kevin Walsh's 2010 All-Ireland champions after that.

Despite having wind advantage in the first half of normal time, Galway trailed by 0-2 to 0-4 after 25 minutes as Brian Egan and Niall Murphy impressed for the home side. But points from Eoin Joyce and Martin Coady saw the sides go into the break level on 0-4 apiece.

Sligo resumed with three unanswered points and looked the most likely winners until Cathal Coleman's goal revived Galway's challenge. And with Martin Coady highly impressive, the visitors powered to victory in extra-time.
