Local colleges bid for Connacht gold

March 11, 2010
Local schools Summerhill College and St. Attracta's College, Tubbercurry will go in search of Connacht glory at Charlestown on Saturday.

St. Attracta's will face St. Louis', Kiltimagh in the Connacht Colleges SFC 'B' final at 1pm, and this will be followed by the meeting of Summerhill College and St. Gerald's, Castlebar in the 'A' final at 2.30pm.

The appearance of two Sligo schools in provincial finals at the same venue should guarantee big support from the Yeats County, while it also reflects well on the standard of underage football in the county at the moment.

Summerhill have taken the scalps of St. Jarlath's and St. Muirdach's to reach their first final since 1985 and their manager Shane Reynolds cannot wait for the big day to come around.

"The lads have put in a huge amount of work throughout the championship and the wins over St. Jarlath's and St. Muirdeach's has given us great momentum as we approach the final. While we acknowledge that there's still a lot we have to work on, we are looking forward to the final in a very positive frame of mind."

After easing through the first two rounds of the 'B' championship, Tubbercurry College needed extra-time to get the better of Rice College, Westport in last week's semi-final.

"It was just the test we needed," said manager Anthony Brennan.

"We learned a lot from what was an exceptional game of football and I was delighted at the way the lads responded when the chips were down. They are a very talented group of young lads with a great attitude and they're ready to give it all they have in Saturday's final."
