St. Mary's Notes 25th August 2008 http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/ Bord na nÓg City League Competition Training for both the U-9 and U-11 teams begin on Monday September 1st in Kent Park at 5.30pm. For further information please contact Adrian Muldowney or Francis Fidgeon for U-9, and Aidan Rooney or Hugh O'Hehir for U-11. U-18 - The final championship group match against St. Farnan's took place on Monday 25th August. With the quarter finals looming, it is important that all players attend training. The club would like to wish the best of luck to all students as they prepare for another year of school or college. We would encourage all Students to make themselves available for selection for either their school or college teams. U-16 - We were lucky to escape with a draw in the Championship quarterfinal against Mullinabreena/Coolaney on a scoreline of 0-15 to 1-12. Despite being up 7 points midway through the second half we found it difficult to repel an excellent fightback from the visitors. Robert Keegan, Brian O'Donnell and Colm Egan performed well. We replay on Thursday away in Mullinabreena at 7pm. Meet in St. Mary's at 5.45pm. Saturday Morning Coaching Saturday morning coaching was cancelled again last week due to the inclement weather. Coaching will resume again this Saturday between 10.30am and 12pm. As there are only a few Saturdays left we would encourage as many of our young players as possible to attend. We would encourage parents to bring their children along to these Saturday morning sessions and hopefully your children will enjoy the coaching and want to come back. If you want further information, contact Adrian Muldowney (087-6181215), Francis Fidgeon (087-2282218). Senior/Intermediate Hard luck to our Intermediate team who were beaten by a very strong St. Molaise Gaels team on Sunday last. Despite an excellent first half showing where we took the lead and defended heroically for the first half the Grange men got on top in the second half and scored a number of points to establish an early lead that they never relinquished. On the day we had some excellent performances from Emmet Foley in goals, Simon Gillespie, Alan Colleary and captain Paul Leonard in defence. Colin Walsh was viewed by many as the best player on the pitch and he gave an exhibition of defending and managed to drive us forward on numerous occasions. At midfield Gerry Carr, John Deasy and Joe Campbell battled throughout the hour and worked tirelessly for the cause. Up front we were living on a limited supply but Conor Maye, Ciaran O'Boyle and Glen Monaghan all worked hard and gave 100% throughout. The young subs introduced Ciaran Keaveney, Cian McKeon, Mark Rooney and James Fox all performed well and will have benefited from the experience of playing a fast paced championship encounter. Special mention to the two minors Mark Herrity and Eanna O' Donnell who both gave excellent performances highlighting the bright future they have with the club. Great Credit must go to the intermediate management team of Shane Breheny and David Cummins for all the work they put into the team this year. Reaching the quarter finals and coming fourth in Division 4 is a very encouraging performance and with a number of younger players really making an impression this year the future is bright for the intermediate squad. Shane in particular did an enormous amount of work over the past few months in getting the Intermediate team ready for the championship and his efforts and professionalism were a major factor in the much improved league and championship performances from the Intermediate team this year. Finally it was great to have our two Pauls (Newton and Curley) patrolling the sidelines and encouraging the team on. The Seniors played out a thrilling draw with Bunnannadden in the relegation play off on Saturday evening last at Tourlestrane. Mary's started brightly and after a period of pressure led by two points, before a goal by Bunnannadden just before half time left the score at St. Mary's 0-6 Bunnannadden 1-3 at the interval. The second half was played at a ferocious pace with both teams trading scores with points for Mary's coming from the boot of Stephen Coen, Donnacha Gallagher and Johnny Davey. Final Score St. Mary's 0-11 Bunnannadden 1-8. Best performers for Mary's were Caolan O'Grady, David Martyn and Seamus Burns. The Seniors face Bunnannadden in the replay on Sunday next in Tubbercurry (Throw-in 12.00 noon). We ask all supporters to come out and get behind the Team in what is a massive game for the Club. Well Done Well done to Erin Breheny who came 4th in 80 meters, under 8 in Mosney on Sunday last. Community Games The club would like to say well done to all club members and youths from the area who participated in the Community Games. Website The Club's new Website is now live at http://stmarys.sligo.gaa.ie/. The Club's email address is [email protected].
