Finneran wants a big scalp

Towering midfielder Michael Finneran says Roscommon need to beat Galway this afternoon to be considered a serious championship force.

When the Rossies pulled of a sensational victory over Sligo in the 2010 Connacht final, their critics were quick to point out that hadn't beaten either Galway or Mayo, but those same critics could be silenced if they can down Alan Mulholland's fancied charges.

"We'd like to think that we have improved over the last few years. But you want to see markers of that improvement and to beat a team like Galway would be a serious marker for us," the St. Dominic's clubman said at last week's open evening in Hyde Park.

"If we do win the game on Sunday, that's one more we can tick off the list."

He continued: "We've been waiting for this all year really. The league is parked, we have to forgot about it now. We weren't overly happy with it, but we wouldn't be too disappointed either. We stayed up in Division 3 and that gives us a good, solid base to work on in the next few years.

"It's massive for us and I think it's massive for both teams. Whoever loses is going to be hugely disappointed. We're going to give it everything."
