Duggan draws the curtain down
March 18, 2010
Derek Duggan has retired from senior club football after a long and illustrious career.
A back injury forced the Castlerea, St Kevin's clubman to retire from the intercounty stage in 2000 but he continued to fly the flag at club level and added three county SFC medals to his collection during the intervening years.
All this despite suffering a number of other injuries...
Duggan was a regular on the club's senior team up until 2008 but niggly injuries curtailed his involvement last year. Living in Longford and working in Bailieboro, he decided to inform management that he wouldn't be able to take part in the three-in-a-row bid:
"If you're serious about it, you have to be at most training sessions and I couldn't guarantee that."
However, the player (who's represented the club for 27 years) isn't severing his ties completely and still hopes to play some junior football.
"I still want to be active and junior football gives you more flexibility," he states.
