Roscommon Scor final

14 December 2009

The Roscommon County Final of Scór na nÓg took place in the unique surrounds of the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Sunday last, the 13th of December.

All the events were hotly contested and the adjudicators, who came from Cavan, Westmeath and Roscommon commented on the high standard of competitors and mentioned that they had a very difficult job in making some of the decisions.

The first result of the afternoon to be known was from the Question Time competition, where reigning Connacht champions Ballinameen scored 56 points and in doing so defeated two teams from Kilglass Gaels and one from St. Dominics. In the Figure Dancing competition, 2009 County Champions St. Dominics retained their title by defeating Strokestown, St. Barrys and Kilmore. Strokestown's fortunes improved when Emma Brogan defeated Karen Carty, Aisling O'Connor and Niamh Mannion to take the Solo Singing title - her third in a row. The theme of champions retaining their titles continued in the Instrumental Music competition when Clann na nGael defeated St. Aidans, Eire Óg and Castlerea St. Kevins. Recitation was the next result announced and despite great performances from Tina Carty, Gillian Brennan and Caoimhe McManus the title went to Grace Dooley of Padraig Pearses, for her excellent performance of "The Manager". The Ballad Group title also went to a south Roscommon club; St. Dominics. The lads performed "Dulamon" and "Black is the colour" when defeating outgoing champions St. Barrys, Padraig Pearses and the St. Dominics girls team. This was the clubs 15th Ballad Group title in 16 years! The club captured its third title of the afternoon when they won the Novelty Act competition - defeating Elphin, St. Barrys and St. Dominics B. The final event of the evening was the Set Dancing competition and Strokestown took the honours for the third year in a row when they out-danced Elphin A, Elphin B and Kilmore.
