Connacht club SFC: Charlestown edge through

November 09, 2009
Mayo champions Charlestown will face Corofin in the Connacht club football final following a dramatic extra-time victory over Roscommon's Castlerea at Kiltoom yesterday. Charlestown..1-9 Castlerea, St. Kevin's..0-11 A scoring burst in the first period of extra-time proved the key to the visitors' victory. It was a case of what might have been for Castlerea who looked the more likely winners for most of the second half of normal time, but a late rally by Charlestown, which yielded three points, forced the game into extra-time. The momentum stayed with the Mayo kingpins in the first period of extra-time when points from Paul Mulligan, Tony Mulligan and county star Tom Parsons in the 62nd, 68th and 70th minutes respectively. Castlerea hit back with scores from former county player Nigel Dineen and John Duggan in the second period, but they couldn't get the equaliser as Charlestown held on. Earlier, Ollie Conway had given Charlestown a dream start when he netted after only three minutes, but Castlerea rallied to go into the break on level terms, 0-6 to 1-3. The home side raced three points clear on the restart, but a point from Tony Mulligan sparked a Charlestown revival and they forced extra-time thanks to late points from Paul and Tony Mulligan.
