Nigel Dineen has ruled himself out of the running to replace Kevin McStay as Roscommon's senior football manager.

Nearly six weeks have passed since McStay announced his resignation following three years in charge of the Rossies.

In an interview with Shannonside FM yesterday evening, former Roscommon footballer Dineen revealed he had assembled a backroom team in his bid to become McStay's successor before deciding to withdraw his name from the race because of the length of time it is taking the county board to make an appointment. He believes his native county are on the lookout for an 'outside' manager.

"I did rule myself out of the job that was maybe a week ago at this stage, I did have a team put together," said Dineen who has served as a senior selector and U21 manager in the past.

"I felt that things were maybe dragging a little bit and maybe they were looking for an outside man, and that was what I was led to believe.

"They [the subcommittee charged with finding the county’s next football manager] had contacted different people over the last number of weeks."
