Brian Whelahan has said he would "love to stay on" as Offaly hurling manager despite a difficult first season at the helm.

The Millennium Man, who was appointed to the role last October after originally applying for the minor job, made his intentions clear following the Faithful County's exit from the Liam MacCarthy Cup race at the hands of Tipperary last night.

While Offaly were well beaten, the performance was significantly better than that which resulted in a humiliating defeat to Kilkenny when Whelahan's men last played before the Sky Sports cameras.

Speaking afterwards, the Birr clubman stressed the need for a debate about the development of Offaly hurling, claiming the county is five-10 years behind others in this regard.
