Tragic Offaly schoolboy was a rising GAA star

April 04, 2014
The 11-year-old boy who was tragically killed in a road accident in Co. Offaly yesterday morning was an up-and-coming GAA star.

Fourth-class pupil Jack Wyer from Ballinamere, Tullamore died after he was struck by a car shortly before 9am as he crossed the road from his father's home to visit his grandmother before school. He was the only child of Ramona Lambe and Derek Wyer.

Jack was a member of a well-known GAA family and had shown huge promise as a hurler and Gaelic footballer. His local club Ballinamere enjoyed a memorable 2013 which saw them win Offaly IHC and Leinster club JHC honours.

Ballinamere/Durrow minor club coordinator Pat Cleary, for whom Jack played hurling and football at U12 level, described the youngster as the "heart and soul of the community".

Ballinamere NS principal Larry Fleming said: "He was a gifted sportsman and the best young hurler we had seen at the school in a very long time.

"He came from a great hurling background and Jack was most certainly going to follow in their footsteps. I could see him making the Offaly team.

"He was extremely popular with all the children. He was a very empathetic boy and would always look out for the younger children in the yard. He was such a caring and kind child."

Jack will be laid to rest at Clonminch Cemetery on Saturday following midday funeral Mass at the Church of the Assumption in Tullamore.
