INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - ROUND 1
Raheen Intermediate Footballers came away from Cappincur with a draw against Shamrocks in the opening Round of the Intermediate Football Championship last Saturday evening on a scoreline of 1-06 to 0-09. Both sides had early chances before Niall Dempsey got Raheen off the mark with the first point on 8 mins. The next 10 mins saw Shamrocks open their account with 3 points in a row. Then on 19 mins came the turning point of the half with a Raheen line ball near the 20m line which Paddy Rigney took sending it straight into the square where it came to Willie Stynes at the far post who got his hand to flick it to the net for what would be the only goal. Both sides then added a point apiece before Raheen's Johny Byrne sent over his second and the best point of the game from out on the wing between the 20 and 45m lines. Raheen then added 2 more points from Mark Gorman and Paddy Rigney near the end of the half which gave Raheen a lead of 1-05 to 0-04 at the break. The first 20 mins of the second half belonged to Shamrocks as they turned it round sending over 5 points without reply (4 from frees) to take the lead and could have been further ahead were it not for a few great saves and clearances from Raheen keeper Mark Byrne and corner backs Tommy Spollen and Cathal Maher. Then with 5 mins left Richie Reynolds came to Raheen's rescue as he fired over the equalising point. Shamrocks had a few frees near the end to steal it but they could not get them on target and so it remained level at the final whistle.
