SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Despite staring into the abyss of a possible relegation dogfight, the senior footballers showed great resolve and character to beat Gracefield on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-10 on Saturday evening in O'Connor Park. After going behind in the early stages, goals from Ciarán Kenny and Declan Killian gave Ferbane a narrow half time lead on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-5 with wind advantage to come. The lads struggled to make this advantage pay however and instead fell behind as Gracefield fought for their championship lives. Several strong performances in the middle sector of the field combined with good work off the bench by Conor Lowry, Colin Egan and Ciarán McManus kept the boys in green in touch throughout the half and when late chances fell to Ciarán Kenny, he delivered with 1-1 to give the team a one goal win. This result, combined with Clara's win over St Brigids, means that Ferbane finished the group in fourth position and now face Rhode in the quarter final. A huge improvement will be required to compete against Rhode, however with the spectre of relegation no longer looming, the opportunity is there to throw caution to the wind and hopefully give the 2008 champions plenty to think about.
The full team that played against Gracefield was:
Declan Nugent; Joe Butler, Liam Browne, Gary Rigney; John Mollen, Eddie Lowry, Paddy Moore; Colm Gavin, James Grennan; Ciarán Kenny (2-1), Aidan Keenaghan (0-2), Aaron McDonagh (0-1); Ronan Daly (0-2), Declan Killian (1-0), Paddy Connolly (0-1).
Subs used were: Conor Lowry, Colin Egan, Ciarán McManus.
FERBANE/BELMONT UNDERAGE
Well done to the under-12 footballers who secured their place in the county final with an extra time win over St Broughan's last week. These young players showed great character to dig deep and secure the 4-6 to 2-9 win and they've now given themselves a great chance of a third championship in a row at this grade.
The under-14 footballers play their county final this Sunday morning at 11am in O'Connor Park against Shamrocks and they too will be looking to retain their crown from last year. It's been an excellent year for this group of young players so far but any county final is a difficult game to win and every supporter will be crucial as the lads try to bring home the cup.
