Offaly minor board rocked by McKeown resignation

December 10, 2008
The Offaly Coiste na nOg has been plunged into crisis following the resignation of its chairman. Longford native Fergal McKeown stepped down immediately after last week's county board convention, having being re-elected to the post for a fifth and final year only last month. It's believed that a decision to vote in favour of a Management Committee proposal for the county board to take over the running of the minor football and hurling championships, as well as Offaly's minor football and hurling teams, was a factor in McKeown's decision to stand down. Offaly county board chairman Pat Teehan confirmed that he had accepted McKeown's resignation and, as a referee, hoped that he wouldn't be lost to the GAA in the county. Meanwhile, the long drawn-out Offaly MFC finally reached its conclusion last weekend when Tullamore defeated Edenderry 0-11 to 0-4 in the final. The championship had been held up for several weeks following an investigation into the disgraceful scenes which marred the original semi-final clash between Edenderry and St. Vincent's.
