Gerry Reilly Cup: Winning start for holders

June 29, 2015

Cavan and Monaghan served up a very entertaining game in the Gerry Reilly Cup at Gilson Park Oldcastle

Cavan 0-13 Monaghan 1-9

This hectic round 1 game of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT went right down to the wire with defending champions, Cavan holding out for a one point win over neighbours, Monaghan on Sunday evening in the Gilson Park, Oldcastle.

Cavan played with the help of a strong wind in the first half and led by 4 points before Conor Doyle got Monaghan's first point. It was Cavan's top scorer, Oisin Pierson that opened the scoring with a fine point. Cavan quickly added 2 points from frees (Cian Madden and Oisin Pierson). Another point from play by Cian Madden gave Cavan the dream start. 2 unanswered points from Aaron Reilly & Cormac Wall stretched Cavan's lead, but Monaghan responded with 2 points from Cormac O'Connor & Aaron Mohan.

Cavan went on to stretch their lead to 6 points on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-3. Monaghan seemed to move up a gear after Cavan's Evan Fortune was black carded and added 2 points to their tally by the break.

H/T: Cavan 0-9 Monaghan 0-5

On the resumption, Cian Madden pointed for Cavan, but again Monaghan cancelled that out with a point at the other end. Another Aaron Reilly point put 5 points between the sides. Each team had goal attempts put out for 45's before Aaron Mohan's goal reduced the gap to just 2 points. Mike Cully then pointed to have the minimum between the sides. Monaghan were down to 14 after a red card, but despite this there was simply no holding back by them.  Gary O'Rourke had to make a fantastic save in the Cavan goal's before the winners stretched their lead to 3 points. Monagahan did not give up and got the last scores of the game, but the Cavan defence were able to weather the storm to hold out for victory.
