GORMLEY U PVC MONAGHAN SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Reigning champions, Scotstown, and Clontibret are through to the semi finals of the senior football championship after a weekend of action that promised more than it delivered by way of quality and the weekend also saw two clubs ousted from this years competition, Magheracloone and Monaghan Harps.

Truagh 2-11, Monaghan Harps 1-13.

An opportunist goal by substitute Niall Rooney 11 minutes from the end of normal time was the score that turned this game in favour of the Truagh men in Scotstown on Saturday evening last. At that stage Monaghan Harps were two points in front and looked to be in control of things as a series of errors had seen Truagh miss quite a number of scoring opportunities but the goal kick started a strong finish and they added two points by Paudie McKenna and Chrissy McKenna from a free to open a three points lead. Monaghan Harps did pull back two late points through Aodhan Og McAnespie and Conor Galligan but time ran out and Truagh held out for the narrowest of victories.

Scorers: Truagh: C McKenna 0-6 (3f, 1'45)N Rooney 1-0, P Treanor 1-0, P McKenna 0-3, D McKenna 0-2 (1f). Monaghan Harps: F McMahon 1-1, S Smyth 0-3, D Hahessy 0-3 (3f), A Og McAnespie 0-2, A White, (free), S Coyle, C Galligan and N Treanor (free) 0-1 each. Referee: J McAndrew (Ballybay).

Clontibret 2-13, Latton 0-8.

By the time Clontibret lost the services of top scorer Conor McManus to a black card he had registered eight points, seven from frees, to give his side the platform to push on for victory. Latton did rallied briefly following McManus's demise but Clontibret finished strongly for an unanswered two goals and a point in the final five minutes to win comfortably and become the first team to book their place in the semifinals. The first half was really the Conor McManus show in that he registered six of his side's points to give them a six points cushion at the break and they continued to dominate the exchanges in the second-half with the nearest Latton came to them was when they reduced the lead to 4 points approaching the end of the third quarter. That however was as good as it was to get with goals by Brian Greenan and Dessie Mone killing off the Latton challenge completely. Scorers: Clontibret: C McManus 0-8 (7f), B Greenan 1-1, D Mone 1-0, D Mooney, C Boyle, K Greenan and F Mone 0-1 each. Latton: O Duffy 0-3, H McElroy 0-2 (2f), , B O'Brien, J McElroy and S Coyle (free) 0-1 each. Referee: P McEnaney (Corduff).

Scotstown 2-14, Ballybay 0-8.

Reigning champions Scotstown booked their place in the semi-final at the expense of Ballybay in this tough,, scrappy and at times bad tempered affair that was played in wet and greasy conditions in Clontibret yesterday evening. Ballybay got off to much the brighter start and led by four points after just seven minutes and a further six had elapsed before Scotstown opened their account through Kieran Hughes. By half-time though, Scotstown had turned it around with a goal by Shane Carey when he lashed a rebound from a penalty save to the net  helping them to a 1-5 to 0-4 half-time lead. In the second-half Scotstown continued to dominate with the accuracy of goalkeeper Rory Beggan also playing a big part and any chance Ballybay a had of making a fight of it was killed off in the 22nd minute when Nicholas Corrigan got Scotstown's second goal to send them on their way to victory.
