Monaghan's Caoimhe Mohan with her Ulster GAA Merit Award.
It was celebrations on the double for Monaghan Ladies Football star Caoimhe Mohan this week. On Sunday she played a vital part in Monaghan's victory in the Ladies National Football League division 1 final against Cork, picking a winner's medal, the first league medals for Monaghan in 14 years and on Monday night she was presented with the Ulster GAA Writers Merit Award for April for her contribution in Monaghan's semi-final victory over Dublin. She was described as "the livewire that lit the sparks up front for Monaghan as she hit home 1-3 from play to help brush aside the challenge of the "Light Blues" and her general play also contributed handsomely to Monaghan's victory. Caoimhe scored two points in Monaghan's victory over Cork last Sunday and that brought her seasonal tally to something in the region of 5-13, quite an achievement for one so young. A student nurse at the Dundalk Institute of technology 17 year old Caoimhe described herself as being "shocked" when she was informed that she had picked up the award but having got over the shock she described herself as being "chuffed with the award and it gave me a great boost going into the final". In picking up the award Caoimhe beat off the challenge of Cathal McCarron (Tyrone) and Thomas Corrigan (Fermanagh). Her award includes an engraved Belleek Living Vase, specially designed jewellery by Omeath jeweller, Garrett Mallon, a UGAAWA sports voucher and training gear from O'Neill's International Sports as well as 2 complimentary tickets and over night accommodation for the Association's Silver Jubilee Banquet in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, on Friday, November 17th. The presentation was made to Caoimhe by Quinn Direct Broker Development specialist Shane McCabe at a function in Quinn's Corner on Monday evening last May 14th.
