McKenna Cup: Orchard's strong finish downs Monaghan
January 19, 2012
Armagh 0-13
Monaghan 0-12
Armagh produced a turbo-charged finish to edge out neighbours Monaghan at the Morgan Athletic Grounds last night.
The visitors were much-improved on their display against Down last Sunday when they conceded four goals, but they couldn't avoid another defeat as Paul Carvill came off the bench to land three late points for the Orchard, including the winner from a 50-metre free. Despite this win, Armagh failed to progress to next weekend's semi-finals.
Paul Finlay was once again immense for Monaghan, scoring 0-8, and his explosive start to the year will be a source of huge encouragement for manager Eamonn McEneaney ahead of the start of the NFL.
Armagh enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half, but the sides were level at 0-6 at the break as Finlay kept Monaghan in it. The home side had James Lavery sent off in the 52nd minute, but the 14 men still finished the stronger.
