McKenna Cup: Monaghan's strong finish sees off Mary's

January 09, 2012
Monaghan 0-14
St. Mary's, Belfast 0-6

Monaghan scored five points without reply in the closing seven minutes to record a flattering victory over St. Mary's, Belfast in Clones.

The students enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half, but still trailed by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break after the hosts grabbed the last two points of the half in stoppage-time.

Paul Finlay's move from midfield to full forward had the desired effect for Monaghan as they opened up a four-point lead entering the final 10 minutes, though their cause was helped by wasteful finishing by the students.

Substitute Emmet Bradley's superb pointed free had left just a goal between the sides before unanswered points from Finlay (three), Stephen Gollogly and James Turley saw Monaghan win comfortably in the end.
