Tyholland pip Donaghmoyne

MC GUIGAN BUILDERS INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.
Tyholland 1-8
Donaghmoyne 0-10
Tyholland did just about enough to edge past Donaghmoyne in this very evenly contested intermediate football championship round 3 game in Drumhowan on Saturday evening last. Overall this was a game that promised a more exciting contest than it produced but it was always interesting with never more than a couple of points between the sides at any stage. That said though Tyholland were never headed in the entire contest with the best that Donaghmoyne could achieve was being level with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. By that stage too Tyholland could have been much further in front but they did contrive to cause themselves problems through over elaboration and failing to convert outfield superiority and possession into scores at vital times. Donaghmoyne for their part were always in touch thanks mainly to the accuracy of Rory Woods who finished with 8 points to his credit, four from frees but they lacked scoring support for the county man and sorely missed the present of Pauric Donaghy who was ruled out through suspension. Tyholland for their part always had options in attack but too often failed to capitalise on simple chances that were there for the taking with good possession being squandered or efforts just simply dropping short although at times too defences were seen to good effect. There was a great battle in midfield between Raymond Ronaghan and John Kingham, the latter making a number of timely interceptions as he used his aerial ability to good effect and got good support form Christopher Deery. Both sides enjoyed the benefit of the strong breeze in either half with Donaghmoyne using it to good effect in the second half to launch at times an aerial bombardment of the Tyholland goal which on a couple of occasions enjoyed something of a charmed life with a few near misses and last-ditch goal-line clearances. A goal by Dermot Coyle in the 18th minute of the first half gave Tyholland something of a cushion and they went on to leas by 1-5 to 0-6 at half-time. Scores were at a premium in the second half and with 10 minutes of normal time remaining the sides were level. A minute later Tyholland regained the lead but it wasn't until stoppage time that they were able to extend that lead to two points although by then Donaghmoyne themselves could have been in front but they too were somewhat wasteful from limited opportunities. With three minutes of stoppage time played Donaghmoyne brought the margin down to one but only after another goal-line clearance had denied them a three-pointer that could have seen them snatch a late victory. Tyholland opened the scoring with a point by Paul Askin in the opening minute and they had at least three chances to extend that lead before Rory Woods converted a free in the ninth minute as Tyholland were caught in possession coming out of defence. Dermot Coyle restored Tyholland to the lead with a point from a free two minutes later but only after James McQuaid had been denied by the woodwork. Again Tyholland had a good chance to extend that lead before Rory Woods equalised when he was well placed from a quick free by John Kingham. Karl O'Connell was denied a minute later with a point blank save by Thomas Deery but the goal that Tyholland had threatened came in the 18th minute when Paul Askin centred from a long-range free and Dermot Coyle got in behind the cover to give Thomas Deery no chance. Coyle added a point from a free in the 19th minute to put Tyholland four in front, the biggest margin at any stage in the game, but by the 21st minute Donaghmoyne had the margin down to two with a brace from play by Rory Woods, Marty Hanley the provider on both occasions. Shane Treanor restored Tyholland to a three points lead with seven minutes of normal time remaining but three minutes later Donaghmoyne had the margin down to the minimum, thanks again to the accuracy of Rory Woods with two points in quick succession, one from a free. Tyholland had now moved Gary McQuaid to full back in an effort to curb Woods' increasing influence and they finished with a point in stoppage time from Dermot Coyle to leave the half-time score Tyholland 1-5, Donaghmoyne 0-6.
Rory Woods reduced the deficit to the minimum two minutes into the second-half when he converted a free for a foul on John Cumiskey but three minutes later Tyholland edged two points in front yet again when Shane Treanor converted a free for a foul on Karl O'Connell, and only after Peadar Farrelly had been denied by the woodwork. Tyholland were enjoying an increasing amount of possession at this stage but a couple of efforts dropped short to the keeper, three were off target and Peadar Farrelly's effort came off the bottom of the Donaghmoyne post before Rory Woods again reduced the deficit to the minimum in the 14th minute when he converted a free for a foul and Ciaran Daly. Chances accrued at both ends before Donaghmoyne drew level for the first time when Ciaran Daly got on the end of a long free in by John Kingham but within a minute Tyholland were back in front with a point from a free by Shane Treanor for a foul on Raymond Ronaghan. For the remainder of normal time it was a case of missed chances at both ends, Tyholland probably marginally more guilty, before Paul Askin extended their lead to two points two minutes into stoppage time. Donaghmoyne rallied immediately and had the Tyholland goal under pressure but their only reward was a point by John Farrell following a goalmouth scramble to leave the minimum between the sides when Dermot Lynch blew the full-time whistle.
