A true friend

December 31, 2009
Monaghan GAA has a true friend in JG Kelly Supplies Ltd. The locally-founded nationwide building products provider is a former official sponsor of our county team and remains a big supporter of the Oriel County through to the present day. As the company prepares to celebrate its 21st anniversary, 'Monaghan Match 2009' spoke to sales manager Barry
Daly about this tremendous local success story.

It's always nice to see locals doing well. Whether it's on the gaelic football field, on the big screen, on a horseracing track, in the boxing ring or in the business world, Monaghan people always derive a great amount of mutual celebration / satisfaction from the accomplishments of 'one of our own'. That's the way it's always been. We stick together, celebrating the good times and lending support to one another when things don't go quite according to plan.
JG Kelly Supplies Ltd. is a great Monaghan success story and the company certainly did its bit for county pride when stepping forward as official sponsor of the county's GAA teams earlier this decade. Although that sponsorship has since elapsed, the directors and staff at Kellys still have the interests of Monaghan football and hurling very much at heart.
JG Kelly Supplies Ltd. was founded by current MD Gerard Kelly in July 1989, originating from humble beginnings with just a pick-up truck and a borrowed storage facility. With progressive expansion in the Irish construction market, the company soon needed new premises and in December '89 the Mall Road became company HQ. Today, there are also outlets in Dublin and Limerick.
Through intensive communications with general merchants and installers, the core of the business in the formative years was in uPVC fascia and soffit systems, with the west of Ireland as the main market. In 1991, cellular and aluminium rainwater products were added to the hollow soffit and fascia range and JG Kelly Supplies went into partnership with French plastic conglomerate, Grosfillex, to market and distribute their uPVC wall panelling in Ireland.
January 1994 saw the opening of the Dublin warehouse in the Western Industrial Estate on the Naas Road, conveniently servicing installers in the Greater Dublin area. By 1997, JG Kelly was supplying customers in all 32 counties and had also extended its range of products to include the prestigious Regency rainwater systems and the Toffolo expansion joint/screed for cost-effective forming for concrete slabs and industrial floors.
Due to extensive demands for the company's products, a new 5,000 sq. ft warehouse was acquired at Ballysimon Road, Limerick in October 2000, which would boost the service to customers in the Munster region.
The company's abiding philosophy is to use the highest quality materials and offer the best possible service to customers at all times, constantly improving the existing product range and always looking for new and innovative ideas, which make life easier for the builder and enhance the property for the home owner.
Two new lines have been introduced this year, considerably strengthening the JG Kelly Supplies range. By rolling out these new products, the company hopes to consolidate its position in an under-pressure sector of the market.
JG Kelly has joined forces with UK-based Eccles Foundry and is offering its innovative range of reinforced fibre resin composite manhole covers, which are lightweight to handle and non-slip to comply with all Heath & Safety legislation. These complement the company's existing range of drainage systems.
Also added to the JG Kelly range, from LUX Elements in Germany, are flush-fit shower trays and foam-based construction panels for wet-room applications. These are also suitable for general construction.
Alongside the established, tried-and-trusted range of products already supplied by JG Kelly, these two new lines will ensure that the company continues to provide customers with the most comprehensive range of products possible, all at the best possible price. Barry continues: "With the times that are in it, we are delighted to provide a bigger range of products than ever before. There has been a big fall-off in the construction industry, but we'll continue to provide quality products and a service that people can depend on."
JG Kelly Supplies products are stocked by all the major builder's providers in Ireland, including Chadwicks, Brooks, Dublin Providers and Irish Building Supplies. With Gerard Kelly at the helm, the company has the expertise, tradition and wherewithal to pull through the economic downturn and come out the other side. This can be achieved by constantly catering for customer needs; understanding the market; and sourcing the best products available.
The company maintains its strong links with the GAA and it's fair to say that the name JG Kelly will always be synonymous with Monaghan GAA.
Back in the early days of Seamus McEnaney's management of the senior county team, JG Kelly was the county sponsor as Monaghan emerged from the wilderness to win the 2005 Division Two national football league (their first major success in 17 years) and gain promotion to the top flight. That sensational success was achieved by virtue of a 1-13 to 1-11 semi-final win over Derry in Clones and a stunning 3-13 to 3-12 Croke Park victory over Meath in the decider. When Damien Freeman hoisted the silverware at Headquarters, it was a clear sign that the Oriel County was back as a force to be reckoned with.
Since then, Monaghan have been there or thereabouts in the championship every year, twice coming within an ace of beating Kerry at Croke Park and also qualifying for their first Ulster final since 1988, pushing Tyrone all the way in the '07 provincial decider. Monaghan are now widely regarded as genuine contenders for the Anglo-Celt and Sam Maguire Cups, and JG Kelly Supplies was on board as sponsor when the Oriel County revival commenced.
