Oxigen breathing new life into the GAA

December 31, 2009
Oxigen Environmental is one of the leading recycling firms in the country since it was established way back in 1987. That's 22 years of providing a top quality and efficient service to a customer base that covers 12 counties spread throughout Ireland.

The family owned company is run by Sean Doyle and for this year's edition of the Monaghan Yearbook; we speak to his son John about the history, success and location of the business as well as their involvement in GAA sponsorship.
Oxigen provides a full range of recycling and waste management services to both the domestic and commercial market.

In addition to recycling and waste collections, Oxigen provide specialist services such as plastics reprocessing, hazardous waste management, confidential shredding and data destruction, sludge management and energy generation.
With offices in Cavan, Dundalk, Dublin and Tullamore, they cover the North-East, Midlands and East of the country, but John admitted that they are always looking to expand their customer base.

"We have plans to open more material processing plants, which will ensure maximum diversion of waste from landfill. We know that these are difficult times, but you have to be optimistic that things will pick up in the near future," said John.
"We are continually working to improve our service and although there is massive competition in the industry, we are confident that the service we provide is top class. We also have very competitive rates across all service sectors and we are working on expanding the range of recycling services offered.

Of course, legislation must be adhered to and John stressed that the importance of following all the regulations could not be underestimated. "The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the governing body for waste management regulations and all the waste that we handle must be monitored right from collection through to all the recovery processes"

"At Oxigen we strive to recover as much raw materials as possible, and in doing so we minimize the amount of material sent to licensed landfills. There is a big drive on to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and that is why there is now more Government emphasis on recycling than there has been in the past."
Having over 80,000 customers in their collection service means that Oxigen has many trucks on the road almost every day of the week. Of course, this means that maintenance is high on their agenda, all of which is done in-house.
"We employ16 full-time mechanics and they service and maintain our trucks and machinery. We know the importance of doing this as downtime is something we strive to avoid."

Employing over 300 people means that Oxigen Environmental is one of the leading employers in the North-East and Oxigen continually work to maintain these levels.
"We are doing our utmost to keep our employment levels stable. Our staff have been very loyal, many of whom have been with us for up to 20 years. They are all highly skilled in what they do and they've played a massive part in the success of the company," added John, who divides his time between the Dundalk and Cavan offices.

"Our facilities are EPA licensed and all waste vehicles comply with Road Traffic Acts and Waste Collection Permit Legislation. Our customers can rest assured that all links in the waste management chain are auditable and verifiable. Oxigen Environmental has also received ISO Certification and operates a strict quality management system."
John revealed that the commercial market had subsided somewhat, which is no surprise given the loss that the construction industry has suffered since the start of the recession.
"The volume of work in the commercial sector has definitely dropped off in the last 12 months. We were expecting that to happen due to the turn down in the construction industry, but hopefully, it will return in the near future."
Customer satisfaction is the key to Oxigen's success over the last couple of decades and Oxigen endeavor to ensure that customers receive the highest quality service.
"We put the customer first - each time, every time. Our customers have helped us grow and we continuously excite our customers by regularly meeting their requirement for an efficient and professional recycling and waste management service.
"Our technical expertise, logistical capability and professional service levels have enabled Oxigen Environmental to create strong recycling solutions for over 80,000 customers in the Leinster and Ulster regions."
Coming from a GAA background, John knows the importance of sponsorship within the association. Having lined out with the Louth Seniors during 06 & 07 and still lining out for his club Naomh Fionnbarra, he has seen at close hand how much it costs to run a club.
"We have a big interest in the GAA, my family has been involved in it for as long as I can remember. Myself and my two brothers still play for the local club. We have been involved in a number of sponsorship deals, and the latest has been sponsoring the Carrickmacross Emmets minor football team. Our local sales rep, Pat McNally is involved with the club and we agreed to sponsor them for the year. We realise that many of our customers are involved in the GAA and we do our best to help out where we can."
