Handball: Emyvale Handball Club has already had a great start to the year. Peter Larkin was awarded the Senior Handballer of the Year and Darren Doherty received a special award in recognition of his achievements in winning two world titles in 2009 at the Monaghan GAA Awards night at the end of January. They also had great success in the Boys Juvenile Doubles competitions. In the U13 group Mark Mc Donnell and Gareth Mc Donald won 3-15, 15-5 & 15-7 against Brad Mc Caffery and Jack Kelly in an all Emyvale final. In the U14 group Conal Mc Kenna and Stephen Mc Donald were narrowly beaten in the final. Darren Doherty won the U16 county final even though he is only 14. In the U17 group David Downey and Christopher Curran won their final. All these winners went through to represent Monaghan the Ulster Juvenile Championships. Mark and Gareth won their semi-final and were beaten last week-end by a pair from Tyrone. Darren went on to win his final so congratulations to him. To crown things off, Darren Doherty won the final of the 2nd level Colleges Junior Singles All Ireland Competition representing St. Macartan's College. He beat Barry Nash, Co. Clare in the semi-final and in the final he met Colin Crehan, both old rivals of Darrens but he beat both. The U15 team won the county title in Community Games. On the senior front Adrian Mc Kenna reached the final of the Novice 2 league but he was beaten by Sean Clerkin, Bawn. So well done to all and especially Peter Larkin who must be very proud of his protégés.
