Victory for hungrier Toome
September 02, 2008
WESTENRA HOTEL JUNIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY.
Toome 1-13
Oram 0-10
A hungrier, more resilient Toome made no mistake at the second attempt as they deservedly advanced to the quarter-finals of the junior football championship at the expense of Oram in this entertaining if never thrilling replay at the excellently appointed Blackhill venue on Saturday afternoon last.
When the sides met a week previous Oram came back to snatch a draw with a late equaliser but there was to be no such reprieve on this occasion as Toome dominated the game from start to finish and had the result wrapped up some time before the end, leading by nine points with just eight minutes of normal time remaining. Oram did register three late points in the final minutes but they were merely consolation scores at the end of a contest where they were outclassed for most of the hour.
Disciplined defending by Toome, with Alan and Stephen Lambe dominating the central positions was a key feature while upfront they had the accuracy of team captain Gavin Flanagan who finished with a personal tally of eight points, only two of which came from frees as he wrecked havoc on the Oram defence. While Oram opened the scoring with a point in the third minute Toome went on to lead by three points at half-time and they laid the foundations for victory with a scintillating third quarter at the end of which they had extended their lead to nine points and held the opposition scoreless.
Oram to their credit tried everything they knew but they could not wrest the initiative from Toome despite the best efforts of Tony Graham, Barry Quinn, Aaron Molloy and Mark Mone and their cause was not helped either when wing back PJ Flanagan was dismissed some 10 minutes into the second half following an altercation with Toome's Paul Kelly. Entering the final 10 minutes Oram had reduced the deficit to seven points but two minutes later they found themselves facing a nine points gap and while they put in a late flurry of activity they could only manage to reduce the final deficit to six as Toome held out for a deserved victory.
