Blayney Club Notes
September 02, 2008
Seniors - The senior team progressed to the semi-final stage of the club championship after a convincing win over old rivals Scotstown on Sunday last. Blayney started well and held the lead throughout the game. Early scores from Ciaran Tavey paved the way for the win but the big scores of the first half came from the boot of Cairan Hanratty in quick succession. The first same the Blayney forwards work extremely hard to dispossess the opposition and move the ball quickly with midfielder Jason Hughes wisely squaring the ball to Hanratty who coolly finished to the net. Shortly after this, Hanratty again raised the green flag with a more spectacular finish off the crossbar. Blayney never looked back and despite Scotstown enjoying some possession, the Blayney rearguard held firm to deny them any clear goal opportunities. As the half entered the closing stages, Blayney turned the screw again and out some fine scores on the board through Niall Duffy and Patrick Tavey, who was making his championship debut. The second half went much of the way of the first with Scotstown winning some possession but struggling to break down the Blayney defence with Cairan Hughes, Stephen McGeough and Paddy Mallon in fine form and when they did manage to get through Pauric McBennett denied them with some assured goalkeeping. As the half wore on, Blayney took further control through a rare Francis Moore goal after some great work by Hanratty. Blayney added on late points from Moore, Jason Hughes and Hanratty as they closed the game out for a final win on 3-12 to 0-09. Others to impress in a very good team display was the other debutant Dermot Malone, Dermot McArdle, Marty McElroy and Niall Duffy. Blayney will await winners from the loser groups until they know there semi-final opponents.
