Toome GAA Notes
September 02, 2008
The New All Weather Astro Turf type Pitch is now completed; the carpet has been laid and filled with the appropriate quality and quantity of infill in order to mimic natural field playing conditions. The fencing, flood lighting, goal posts and cross field netting are all erected and the Club now has an amenity to compare with any in the country. This will enable all year round outdoor facilities for training and playing purposes for the youth of the area. The provision of this type amenity is one of the objectives of the GAA and is a fundamental part of the games development. The pitch measures 75 x 40 metres and may be subdivided into 3 separate pitches, each measuring 25 x 40 metres. This facility is also available to other clubs, interested groups and schools. Under 13 league: We were defeated by a strong Blackhill under 13 side in St Victor's park on Monday evening last in the first game of the season. Toome performed very well in the first half but a lack of match practice was their undoing at the latter end of the second half when the visitors got some vital scores. There was a very good performance from all of the young youngsters. The next game will take place away to Drumhowan at 12.00 on Saturday 6 th. The team need your support. Please try and be there.
Toome Golf Classic: Fundraising has begun for our annual Golf Classic which will take place on Saturday 27th September on Castleblayney Golf Coarse. Please support generously. The next fund raising meeting will take place in the Centre on Wednesday 10th at 9.30. Please try and be there.
Junior Championship Re-play. History was made in Blackhill on Saturday last when Toome gave arguably their best performances of the season when overcoming near neighbours Oram in the replay of the Junior Championship fixture on a score line of 1-13 to 0-10 - this was the first time that the Reds defeated Oram in the Championship in over twenty years. Their performance is testament to how far this young team have progressed under the astute management of Jim McConville.
The game was fought with typical championship fervour by both sides who, for the most part, served up excellent fare. Toome showed an improvement in their general team play, using the open spaces to good effect, and by generally upping their performance from the drawn game. Captain Gavin Flanagan led by example and continued his good scoring form with a tally of 8 points (2f). Oram put up a stubborn resistance and also played with a good deal of flair, particularly in the latter part of the second half when they ran at the Toome defence. They also had a superior scoring ratio, registering only two wides to Toome's twelve.
Oram opened the scoring with an Aaron Molloy pointed free after four minutes. This was cancelled out almost immediately by Stephen Lambe after a good play involving Francis Quinn and Gerard Cunningham. Joe Kelly added a good point which was closely followed by a similar score from Gavin Flanagan from a pass by Cian McGovern. Toome 'keeper Niall Finnegan was called upon to make a good save before Aaron Molloy pointed from a free for Oram. Gavin Flanagan and Turlough Fitzsimons exchanged points from play and two minutes later Gavin had an excellent point from a placed ball. One of the best moves of the game followed two minutes later when Toome ace Gary Wilson spread-eagled the Oram defence with a fine run, offloaded to Shane Moore, took the return pass to score a crucial goal. This goal put five points between the teams and proved to be a turning point as it left Oram playing catch up for the remainder of the game. Before half time, Oram had points from P.J. Flanagan (45) and Michael Mone from play. On the stroke of half time, Toome were unlucky not to register another goal when Cian McGovern failed to connect from close range. The half time score was Toome 1.5 to Oram's 0.5.
Toome dominated the opening fifteen minutes of the second half. Gary Wilson opened the scoring with a point from play after four minutes. The play became somewhat scrappy and niggly resulting in Oram's Rory Murphy picking up a yellow card for a foul on Paul Kelly. Gavin Flanagan scored an excellent point from a free followed by a similar score from Gerard Cunningham. Oram's P.J. Flanagan received a red card for a foul on Paul Kelly in the 10th minute. Toome were now leading by 1-9 to 0.5 after 12 minutes in the second half. Good play from Stephen Quinn and Breffni Morgan resulted in a point from Gavin who scored again after one minute. Oram got their first point of the half after 16 minutes via an Aaron Molloy free and he followed up with another within a minute. Oram upped their game at this stage and Niall Finnegan was called upon to make a vital save before Stephen Lambe punched over a relieving point at the other end after a good assist from Gerard Cunningham to leave the score at 1.12 to 0.7 after 20 minutes. Gavin pointed after good work from Francis Quinn. Aaron Molloy added another point from a free followed by a John Mone point after 26 minutes. Turlough Fitzsimmons completed the scoring with an Oram point.
This was a gutsy team performance by a fitter Toome team. The defence, well marshalled by Niall Finnegan, performed very well as a unit with Stephen and Alan Lambe and Stephen Quinn excelling throughout. The midfield combination of Francis Quinn and Paul Kelly was an effective pairing, Gavin Flanagan was a continuous thorn in the side of the Oram defence and Gary Wilson and Gerard Cunningham showed up to good effect
Oram had good performances from the ever elusive John Mone, Aaron Molloy, and Gavin Fox.
