Colin Walshe will miss Monaghan's Allianz Football League opener against Galway next weekend after sustaining an ankle injury in Saturday night's McKenna Cup final defeat to Tyrone.

The former All Star corner back was replaced after just four minutes by Kieran Duffy, and afterwards Seamus McEnaney confirmed that he will miss the trip to Pearse Stadium.

The Monaghan manager didn't place too much stock in the final of the pre-season competition, something which was reflected in his team selection.

"We wanted to give as many players an hour-and-a-half of football in the McKenna Cup and if you go back through it, I've 30 players that played an hour-and-a-half over three games and I'm delighted with that," he told the Irish News.

"The only game I'm interested in is Galway. It's our first game away, it's Padraic Joyce's first game in charge of Galway and I'm sure there'll be a big crowd in Salthill."
