Monaghan boss Malachy O’Rourke says he will use the McKenna Cup to hopefully assess new talent ahead of the competitive season.

The Farney men will start their pre-season competition against Antrim in Clones on December 30th and, speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, O’Rourke says they’ll be looking to win every game in order to get a deep before the National League commences at the end of January.

"We had a very big panel this year and there are probably a lot of players there who would not have got as much game time as they would have liked, and maybe we as management would like to have seen them get as well," said the Derrylin native.

"The McKenna Cup gives us the chance to be competitive every game. We want to win each time because the more games we get in January the better."

He added: "All teams will be keen to hit the ground running and we are no exception. The league starts at the end of January and this will keep us all strongly focused."
