Beggan plays down latest heroics

Scotstown goalkeeper Rory Beggan.

2018 just gets better and better for Rory Beggan.

A fortnight after he was named All Star goalkeeper ahead of Dublin legend Stephen Cluxton, Beggan nailed an injury-time free from the 45-metre line to give Scotstown a dramatic victory over Coleraine in yesterday's Ulster club SFC semi-final.

However, the Monaghan custodian was doing his best to spread the praise around after another stellar performance which yielded three points from placed balls.

"When I got that last chance, I tried to compose myself, judge the wind and then just hope for the best," he explained to the Belfast Telegraph.

"I might have got the winning point but the boys all put in a huge effort especially in the closing stages. While it's great to get personal accolades at county level, it's also extremely satisfying to share in victories such as this with your club colleagues."

Meanwhile, a crestfallen Coleraine manager Sean McGoldrick felt the free shouldn't have been awarded.

"That free at the end was fairly innocuous, it was right on the 45-metre line so for a player like Beggan, it was going to be no bother," he said.

"But referees' decisions go with you and against you, it's ups and downs. At the end of the day, we lost the game there today because we didn't take our chances."
