MC ELVANEY’S WASTE & RECYCLING INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL

Doohamlet 3-12

Donaghmoyne 2-9

(After Extra Time)

Doohamlet booked their place in the final of the McElvaney’s Waste and Recycling intermediate football championship, but it took extra time for them to see off the challenge of Donaghmoyne in what was overall a fairly low key and at times scrappy, stop start affair that was played in bright if somewhat chilly conditions in Castleblayney on Saturday afternoon last.

This was a game that never really caught fire but it was also a game that saw Donaghmoyne’s Aaron Courtney stretchered off some 8 minutes into the 2nd half and later removed to hospital by ambulance after a lengthy wait. Ten minutes later in the second-half there was another lengthy stoppage when Pauric Donaghy received treatment on the pitch but was able to resume which saw an unprecedented 15 minutes of stoppage time announced by the referee, but even that did not separate the sides with Doohamlet forcing extra time with a point from a free by Barry McGinn in the 16th minute of injury time. Doohamlet led at half-time by 3 points and while the standard of play improved a little in the second-half it was goals that kept the game alive, Donaghmoyne hitting their 2nd in the 20th minute to level the match and then taking the lead, only to be hauled back to parity and extra time. Another goal gave Doohamlet the advantage at half-time in extra time and they did finish the game strongly with 4 unanswered points in the 2nd period of stoppage time to win by 6 at the finish.
