FL Div 2: Good second half display swings it for Curraha

April 30, 2018

Curraha's Jack O'Connor

Curraha 1-15 Walterstown 2-07

Despite trailing at half time Curraha produced a nine-point turnaround to come out winners in this rescheduled Division 2 AFL encounter.

This was the first game played in Curraha all year despite it being late April and it was a fine summers day for a game of football. It was the away side who opened proceedings with an early free but four unanswered points came from Moriarty (2), Jack O'Connor and Andrew Coyle. Another free from Walterstown brought the deficit it two and soon after they got their first from play. This was then followed by a goal after they received some luck with the breaking ball from a high ball into the square. This was a golden spell for the away side and they soon had a three-point lead after another well worked score. Moriarty and O'Connor were doing damage when they got on the ball and they added points to bring it to a one point game late on in the opening half but another green flag was raised for the Walterstown men just on the stroke of half time. However, two late Moriarty points brought his sides deficit to being just two at the break.

A David Toner point from the restart set the tone for Curraha but Waltertsown added two of their own inside the opening ten minutes to lead 2-06 to 0-09. Curraha saw black cards then dished out to David Coyle and Brian Murphy and substitute Paraic O'Hanrahan was pivotal in creating Curraha's goal when he played in Moriarty with a sublime pass. This gave Curraha great momentum and Moriarty and Toner added points to put their side in front with 15 minutes remaining. A Walterstown point brought the game back to the minimum but that was to be their last score as Curraha finished the stronger with four unanswered points in the last ten minutes.
