Brian Meade for full back??

(Oldest Posts First)

I know this might have been proposed before but i really think it should be tried out!! He is big and strong and has a bit of pace about him! Cause we are pretty desperate at this stage!!

Too late to try him there I'd say and I doubt EOB would anyway.. needed around midfield for his workrate.. so definately not..

I made this suggestion last year and was rounded on by a number of our experts on this page. It might be a little late in the season for trying this but to be honest it is a better suggestion than trying Moyles there again. I have no confidence in Moyles as full back I also think that the presence of McKeigue in he corner is putting additional pressure on the full back. Also the answer is not Harrington. He is one of he best corner backs in the game but putting him in full back just messes up two positions.

The Rí has my backing on all the points he's raised. No sense tampering with Harrington when he is so solid in the corner. Moyles is not an inter-county standard full back. That said I am very worried about this issue because Macken doesn't like he could live with championship pace and a talented FF. EOB needs to do something here and fast.

The options are very limited so they might as well give him a shoot the only thing is that Meade has played very little is any football in the backs so it would be a major transition to start playing full-back at inter-county level. I remember years ago Boylan tried PJ Gillic at full-back in a few league games, Gillic was a very good midfielder/forward and was also effictive at full-back when he was marking an average full-forward but as soon as he came up against a crafty full-forward with good movement his postional sense wasnt up to scratch because he had always played further out the field, I think it would be the same with Meade.

In recent years the major teams Kerry and Tyrone have understood the importance of having a good full back,

Cormac McAnallan switched to full back for Tyrone with less than a week to prepare for a replay against Down in The Ulster Championship back in 2003.

Seamus Moynahan was the most gifted cente back in Ireland but he played full back for Kerry because they had nobody else to cover the position.

Cork and Dublin have lacked in this area. Paddy Christie although limited was more than capable of holding his own. Cork last year had Michael Shields who no doubt is a very good footballer but he was too easily exposed, as Moyles was against Kerry.

Good players can make these kinds of switches.

Now im not saying its the catalyst for an All Ireland but when the spine of the team is right we can then start dreaming of bringing back the good old days.

The main positive of putting Brian Meade at full-back? Well, he wouldn't be hanging around midfield kicking all our posession away ;p

This really smacks of desperartion. He's a fine midfielder but like a lot of big men around the middle, he has a tendency to lumber into tackles. You can get away with that at midfield but in the full-back line you need to be able to shadow a player, push him onto his weak foot, try to anticipate the ball coming in if you're playing your man from the front. Yes, now and then you have to make yourself big and literally push the forward away from the square but usually you need to be clinical in the tackle.

Remember a modern full-back is essentially playing right across the 13, and sometimes out on the 40, he's not ensconced on the edge of the square like full-backs of yesteryear.

Caomhin King should have been blooded at full-back for the seniors a long time ago. He's played here for Meath through various under-age grades. He would have provided real cover for Reilly in the long-term but because we have gone through so many managers recently, Moyles was always the safe option they defaulted to.

Has to be said,i couldnt care less if everyone is in agreement that Meade would make a good full back, this is a completely daft suggestion. Some of the ideas on this site are absolutely ridiculous. He should not and will not be full back, end of story. This and the "bring back Geraghty" thread, stupidity at its worst.
Just waiting now for yet another "John Donohue for centre back thread",usually pops up every now and again.
Lads lets get serious here.

Kevin Reilly wont be fit enough for Championship football when the ground hardens and everything speeds up. Sure he has missed a year, and all of this winters training and games already. I for one will be very annoyed if he is played at full back this year at any stage, as this will be found out and again it will be too late and we'll be going home from Croker again with our tails between our legs. Play Moyles at Full-Back and stop messing about with the team please.

If i was EOB and i had a choice between ,Macken,McKiege and Moyles.I would play Moyles there because he might be a bit wiser after last year.
