Meath Team: you decide - full forward

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

One more place left to fill. Choose the player you would like to see on the edge of the square.

Jamie Queeney
Joe Sheridan
Brian Sheridan
Brian Farrell
Shane O'Rourke
Caoimhin King :)

Joe is already selected at centre half forward but a lot of people still think full forward is his best position so feel free to vote him in here if you wish and we can then vote on which position is best for him.

Ha Caomhin King, nice one Kennys

I'll go for Queeny based on the fact he has had more game time to date, however, if farrell gets some matches into him on the league he is a very realistic candidate too.
But for now,
Queeny!

Queeney based on your team from this thread so far.

That said I'd rather Moyles at 11, Joe at 14 and Queeney at 15.

Cian Ward

I'd have Cian Ward on the edge of the square, but not sure if he was voted in anywhere else as missed result of corner forward positions. If not wonder why he is not on the list of possibilities. As I said before, Ward marshalled by Stephen Bray and a fit again Brian Farrell would pose a strong threatening full forward line. All interchangeable with Joe on the forty. Based on the threads here so far and people's opinion I feel Jamie Queeney will get the nod.

I'm not sure David, I don't think Ward, Farrell and Bray Jr. worked successfully as a front three last year so I'd fail to see how switching one of the Brays is going to have a significant impact. Don't get me wrong, I would much rather have Brayser in the corner but there were two main problems with last years full-forward line:

i) They never looked happy winning posession under the long-ball tactic and...
ii) Although individually very talented footballers Ward and Farrell tend to take too much out of the ball, too often looking to play the hero and attempting the spectacular score.

If you think back to the Mayo game, that full-forward line only sprang to life when Joe moved up towards the square. Similarly Queeney made a very positive impact whenever he took up a position near the posts. That should tell us something about our game-plan.

Jamie Queeney for me has all the attributes required to become a top-class inter-county full-forward. He's much more than a traditional target man though at 6'5'' he certainly fits the mould but it's his movement off the ball that's impressed me most this year. You can play the long-ball in to him and expect results but you can also clip the ball in low and he's just as capable of winning it. Add to that an extremely accurate right foot, steady nerves from dead ball and a hugely impressive goal scoring record for Meath at all levels and I say, give this man the no.14 jersey come the championship.

Jamie Queeney at 14 without any doubt! Much more clinical than Joe there and an a great target man who wins more than his share of ball played into him!

Joe Sheridan, give him the right ball in and nobody will beat him with his strenght on the ball

Joe was poor there on Saturday. It has to be Queeney.

Queeney probably with Joe on the forty. Queeney and Joe seemed to have a good understanding between them. It has to be said that Queeney's poor form of recent IMO is related to Joe not playing. The roles should have been reversed on Sat night. Joe and Queeney are a bit like GG and Ollie Murphy where one compliments the other. Joe is a good kicker of the ball and will play in in first time. Some of the Meath players can't kick the ball 30~40 yards hence I cringe when I see Cormac McGuiness taking frees around the half back/midfield area's. McGuiness is a good player with a great engine but in all honest can't kick any distance or accuratly.

Certain games will suit Joe at FF more than Jamie but if we are looking for someone to play FF in Croke Park then Jamie is the obvious choice with Joe at CF.
I dunno how anyone can suggest Ward at FF.

Diego, I think Queeney's recent dip in form has more to do with how predictable our tactics are becoming. The dogs in the street know we're going to play the long-ball more often then not so they just put a half-back in coverage in front of the D. Mayo used Heaney in a similar fashion last year when we didn't even have a big full-forward line and Down beat us using similar tactics two weeks ago.

As for McGuinness not being able to kick a football? Really? Are you sure you're not confusing him with Brian Meade? They look very similar from a distance. I was constantly berating McGuinness for kicking posession away in the Kerry game until I realised it was the Rathkenny man who was the guilty party. But that's Guinness for you :)

I would go as far as to say that McGuinness is one of the best kickers on the Meath panel. Nothing fancy, but it's usually very accurate. Joe Sheridan has a tremendous range to his kicks, (ex-cic fada winner after all), but there isn't much subtlety and he sometimes overcooks the pass. Get him playing in midfield, either as a starter or as an extra midfielder and then we can really fire off that ammuniton.
